Infinity symbol on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black infinity symbol sits on the side of a finger, held up between another hand's thumb and fingers. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink appears solid black. The photograph is taken at close range against a soft, pale blurred background, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, and mind the candle, for I am an old man and I tell this story only once a year, on the night the bells are silent. Brother Anselm kept the scriptorium at Wrenhallow, where the fens come up to the walls like grey water. He was a copyist of great patience and very little humour, and he had a habit of looping his ink across the margins, one stroke after another, until the page looked like a row of lying-down eights.

The abbot found him one winter with his left hand bound in linen. Not wounded, the infirmarian swore, but marked. Anselm had pricked the sign of the endless loop into the side of his forefinger with a nib dipped in lampblack, so that he would never forget the rule he had broken. Nothing that is made may be made without end, the abbot said, and Anselm said that was the point. He had been copying the same psalm for nine years, and he had begun to suspect the psalm was copying him.

That spring he wrote one last page with that finger held up to the light, and the fen mist came in through the shutters and sat on the vellum. When the abbot read it he found a single line repeated down the sheet, each one ending exactly where the next began, so that the words ran round the edge like water finding its level.

The abbot, being a practical man, closed the book, and it is still in the library at Wrenhallow. Turn it over in your hands and you will find the last word is the first. Mind the candle now. Off you go.
