Sit down, sit down, the 9.14 is never on time and we've got till it comes. You want the one about the stationmaster's girl and the tall fellow with lightning across his face? Right. Her name was Maisie Crane and she sorted the parcels in the back room at Ashby Road, where the lamps buzzed like wasps. One wet Thursday in March a man stepped off the last train carrying a battered cardboard case and wearing a pair of blue suede shoes so bright they hurt to look at.

He asked her the way to the planetarium, which there isn't one, and she told him so. He laughed like a man who'd been told it was raining on another planet. He said he'd come a long way to look at the earth from the outside and it had turned out a bit blue, which he took as a compliment. Then he asked if she knew how to dance, and she said only in the kitchen with the wireless on.
Every evening after that he came to the platform at the same minute, and every evening she brought him tea from the urn, and every evening they took one slow turn under the lamp while the signal bell rang. Her mother said he was a stray. The stationmaster said he was a nuisance. The bolt of lightning on his cheek flickered whenever an engine came through, as if it were listening.
On the last night of the month the case was gone and so was he, and the shoes sat side by side on the bench, polished. Maisie put them on and walked to the end of the platform. Nobody has seen the tall fellow since. But if you stand under that lamp in the rain when the 9.14 goes by, you'll hear someone counting time under their breath, and you'll know he hasn't finished the dance.
