Lettering and lotus tattoos on forearm and upper arm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The photo shows a woman's forearm and upper arm, cropped at the neck, while she wears a white t-shirt with a large printed owl that is not a tattoo. On her forearm are fine-line black lettering reading KEEP GRL PWR with an arrow, and a script word partly visible below it. On her upper arm, a dark patterned tattoo is partly hidden by the sleeve, and a red and black lotus with soft shading sits on the inner arm. The background is bright and out of focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The slate by the scullery door at Seaview was wiped clean every Monday, and every Monday Mrs Hale found something new on it before the kettle boiled. This week it was an arrow, drawn fast in chalk, pointing through the window towards the harbour wall. Beneath it, in careful capitals, someone had written KEEP, and nothing after.

Winnie Oakes had come off the Thursday train with one tin trunk and a bottle of black ink, paying four weeks in advance. Each evening she walked the shingle to the breakwater and counted the boats coming in, and for each boat she made a dot in the back of the guest ledger. Beside the Mary Ann there were three dots and no name, because nobody in Hollin Bay would say whose names had gone down with her.

In July a lotus came up in the rain butt behind the coal shed, which was impossible in a sea town on that coast. It was red at the heart and black at the petals, where the water had gone to ink. Ada did not pull it up. She set a saucer under it and told the milkman to mind his boots.

On the last Monday of the season the lamps of the Mary Ann came round the wall, all of them lit, and Winnie stood on the step with her trunk and a fourth dot ready in her pen. She drew it, closed the ledger, and walked down the lane without her coat. Ada rubbed the slate clean and left the arrow where it was, pointing at the harbour, so that whoever came next would know which way to look.
