Sunflower tattoo on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A small sunflower with orange-yellow petals and a dark centre sits on the ankle, with two green leaves and a thin stem trailing downwards. The linework is fine and the petals are shaded with soft gradients of yellow and orange. The tattoo is centred on a light skin area, with dark jeans cuffed above and black high-top trainers below.

The seed packet came with the spring supply boat, folded inside a tin of tea and a bag of paraffin wicks. You read the word Giant on it twice before you believed it. Mr Pell at the chandlery swore the seeds would take in sandy ground if you dug in kelp and kept the wind off with a fence of driftwood. You did both, and by June the row along the lee wall stood taller than the gate.

Ada, the keeper's wife, said sunflowers turned to follow the sun all day and only stopped once their heads grew heavy with seed. You thought that a foolish habit for a plant until the night the fog came in thick off the Shelf and the lamp swept over nothing but grey. In the morning every head faced east, toward the rock where the Mary Ellen had gone down, as though they had been watching the water too.
Nobody asked you to climb the gallery steps at dawn with a pair of shears and a bucket, but you did, and cut the largest bloom, the one whose petals had gone the colour of the lamp's brass rim. You carried it down the hundred and twelve steps. The stem bent in your hand and dripped sap onto your boots the whole way.
Ada pressed it between two slates on the kitchen table. When it dried she sent it up to the lamp room and pinned it beside the logbook, head still turned toward the sea, where the first boat of the season would see it from a mile out.
