Lettering tattoo on lower back, two women
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Two women kneel outdoors, photographed from behind, one in a white bikini and one in a black bikini. The woman on the right has black lettering tattooed across her lower back above the buttock, with the words too small and blurred to read clearly. The image is warm in tone with natural daylight and a pale ground beneath them.

Marnie had carried the note for thirty years without meaning to, folded into a tight triangle at the bottom of her purse. It had crossed the back row of Mr Pryce's geography lesson in the summer of 1994, passed hand to hand until it reached her with its corners gone soft, and she had read it under the desk with her heart going like a stapler.

The reunion hall at Fairfield Road still smelled of floor polish. By the urn someone had pinned up the Year Eleven photograph, everyone squinting into a sun that had gone in before lunch. Ruth found her near the crisps and said, without preamble, "I had it done. The bit from the note." She turned a little, and Marnie saw the lettering, small and dark and too low down to read easily under the strip lights. It was the same line Marnie had written in blue biro: meet me by the bins at four, bring the good scissors.
"You never came," Marnie said.
"I was there at four. So were you, apparently, just at the other bins, by the field." Ruth laughed, and the sound was so exactly the sound from 1994 that Marnie had to look at the photograph for a moment. Neither of them had known there were two sets of bins.
Later, in the car park, Marnie unfolded the note under the orange light and turned it over. On the blank side, beneath the old handwriting, she wrote a new line in the same blue biro: four o'clock, the field side, I'll bring the scissors.
