Two small star tattoos on the lower stomach

Other · Black and grey · Photo

The image is cropped from the shoulders to the thighs and shows two people standing side by side, each with a small solid black star tattooed just above the waistband of their shorts. The star is simple, with crisp edges and no shading, and sits slightly off centre on the left person's stomach and centre-left on the right person's. The background is soft and neutral, with the pink and white shorts providing the only colour in the frame.

The chart room at Scarrow Head smelled of tallow and wet wool, and Nell had been bent over the Kittiwake Sound for three nights running when her sister came up the stairs with the lamp swinging from one hand. "Father's boat is two hours late," Ada said. "Mrs Pryor says the glass is falling."

Their father had taught them that a star pricked into the paper meant a boat had come home. He had done it for every vessel he brought through the rocks, a single neat point made with the tip of a pin, and the chart was so thick with them that the coastline looked as if it had been measured against the sky. Nell reached for the pin box. Her hand was steadier than she expected, which annoyed her.

Ada set the lamp on the table and leaned over the ledger of tides. "We don't have to wait for him to mark it," she said. "We could mark it now and be wrong." Nell said nothing, because the wind had found the gap under the door and was making the flame lean east, toward the sea and the dark where a boat should have been.

At half past two a bell came up from the landing, thin and bright. Nell pricked the star beside the Sound with her sister's thumb pressed over her own to keep the pin from skidding, and the two of them went down the stairs without bothering to put on their coats.
