Rose sleeve and mandala on a beach
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a red crochet bikini shows a large black and grey sleeve on her left arm, with shaded roses, leaves and other decorative motifs running from shoulder to wrist. Above her shoulder blade sits a fine line mandala design built from dotted and linear detail. The photo is taken outdoors on sand with a blue sky behind, and a second woman in a white crochet outfit is partly visible beside her.

Marjorie Lowe had kept the walled garden at Stannard House for forty-one years, and in all that time she had never let the old climbing rose on the south wall go unpruned past February. Her nephew Tom came up from the village that March with a saw and a bad temper, asking why she couldn't just let the thing die like the rest of the estate.

She took him to the middle of the lawn instead, where the gravel had been laid in rings a century ago and then left to lichen. From the upstairs window, she said, you could see the whole pattern: twelve petals opening from a hub, each one a different width, every line picked out in dark moss. The house had been built by a man who believed a garden should be read like a prayer book, and the roses were the margin notes.
Tom cut the dead canes anyway, but he cut them slowly, reading the nodes as she told him to and looking for the green eye that meant the wood still had life. By dusk he had a pile of brittle grey stems and a scratch across his wrist that he didn't bother to wipe.
Next morning the rose had put out a single shoot the length of a finger, pale as a fingernail, angled exactly toward the gravel. Marjorie stood at the window with her tea going cold and counted the petals in the pattern below. She had always thought the roses were there to hold the design together. Now she wondered whether the design had been drawn around the roses all along.
