Lettering tattoos on fingers and hands
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a bearded man in a tweed suit, shirt and tie, with his face cropped out of the frame. Bold lettering tattoos in a decorative, traditional-style script run across the fingers and the back of each hand, and a further word is partly visible near the wrist beneath a watch. The image is high contrast with sharp detail, and the monochrome treatment makes the black ink stand out against the skin.

Don't you touch that net till I've finished, boy. You want the story or you want to gut mackerel? Right. Dennis Rowe came down the slip at Newlyn in March with his fists shut tight, and nobody on the Ellen May could see what he'd had done. Then the weather turned, and the boat went out with the cold coming off the water like knives, and Dennis hauled rope with those hands for two days without once opening them.

When we got him ashore he laid them flat on the gunwale and there it was, the lettering gone blue across his knuckles. LOVE on the one, HATE on the other, and when he made a fist the two words closed up together and you couldn't tell which was winning. His mother wanted him in the chapel choir. Dennis wanted a fist that said something true about him, and he got one.
The bird came after. A gull with a bent beak followed the Ellen May every tide for a summer, and Dennis swore it was the same one, so across the next set of fingers went BIRD in old black letters. The lads called it the daftest thing they'd ever seen. Then at his wedding he lifted his glass with the right hand and kept the left flat on the table, and nobody asked him why.
So that's your gull, boy, sitting on the wall there looking at your fish. Mind it doesn't have your hand before you've got that net mended.
