Tattooed hands buttoning a dark suit jacket

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a man in a dark suit and tie, with both hands fastening the jacket at the centre. Dotwork shading and geometric patterns are visible on the backs of the hands and up towards the wrists, with small marks on the fingers. The tight crop and monochrome tones focus attention on the hands and the fabric.

Across the road, the tailor Matthias Crane kept his shop with the blinds half down and the door propped open for the draught. Men said he could take a shoulder's measure through a closed coat. Ada did not believe it until the night he crossed over with the jacket under his arm and asked her to fasten it, because the cold had stiffened his fingers and he would not ask anyone else in the street.

She set the button at the centre line, where the two halves of the cloth met like the edges of a clean seam, and pulled it snug. Crane studied it under the lamp for a long while. Then he took a pair of brass dividers from his waistcoat, measured the gap between the button and the buttonhole, and laughed quietly, because it was exactly one sixteenth, the width of the fault she had been chasing all week.

He carried the jacket home without a word. In the morning there was a new coat hanging on her hook, its buttons sewn a sixteenth too far to the left, every one of them, in the same careful stitch.
