Bird and banner tattoo on the neck
Traditional · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a man's neck and lower jaw, with a tattoo of a bird with outstretched wings above a curling banner. Leaf or petal shapes sit beside the banner, and the banner carries small lettering that is too small to read. The shading is grey with bold black outlines, set against a dark suit, white collar and polka dot tie.

The swallow came back to the Marigold the same week the lock-keeper's wife was buried, which is how you knew it meant trouble. You had her tied up at Hythe Lock with a mooring rope gone soft as bread, and there it sat on the coaming, forked tail flicking, eyeing the kettle as if it had paid for the tea.

Uncle Ned had worn a swallow like that for thirty years, inked in a parlour above a chip shop in Gravesend. He used to say one swallow meant you'd sailed the Thames end to end and back without drowning, and he'd tap the banner beneath it and say the words were for later. "Tell you when you're older." Then the February flood took him off the Hoo marshes before you were old enough to ask again.
You found the words in spring, when you finally pried the rotten hatch board loose to stop the leak. He'd scratched them inside with a marlinspike, in square capitals that leaned like a man walking into wind. Three letters and a date. Not a name, not a promise. Just the day he'd last come back up the river alive, and the line underneath it, which was simply: Again.
You didn't tell the lock-keeper. You cast off at first light with the swallow still riding the coaming, and when the tide turned and the bird lifted over the grey water toward the estuary, you didn't call it back. Some words belong to the one who carries them, and the rest belong to whoever is left at the tiller, reading them by the light of a dawn that has no interest in being read.
