Lighthouse and sailing ship with heart on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A traditional style tattoo on the calf shows a sailing ship and red and white lighthouse inside an oval rope frame, set against waves and a pale sky. An anchor with a rope wrap sits above, with black stars on either side, and a large red heart with ornate black filigree sits below. Bold black outlines and flat red, black and tan tones dominate, with the subject centred on the leg.

The last ferry had gone by the time Maggie Harrow reached the slipway, and the harbour lamps were doing their dim best along the wet stone. Her brother had left a note under the chandlery door saying the Marigold was moored off the breakwater with the engine ticking over, and that he would not wait past midnight, which was a lie he had told her every year since their father died. She pulled her coat tight and walked out along the mole, counting the iron bollards the way their father used to, one for each thing he had never said.

The lighthouse on Carrick Point swung its red beam across the water and back, and every third sweep it caught the ropes of the anchor chain hanging from the pier, bright as a fresh cut. She had painted that light on the side of the dinghy at fourteen, and got the stripes wrong, and her father had laughed until he coughed and then made her do it again. Somewhere out past the buoy a bell rang once, slow, as if someone was tapping a glass to ask for quiet.
The Marigold's stern light showed at last, low and yellow. Maggie stood at the edge of the stone and cupped her hands. Her brother's head came up over the rail, and he lifted one arm, and she saw that he was holding something red against his chest, a tin with a cracked heart painted on the lid, the one their mother had kept buttons in.
He threw her the bowline. She caught it, made it fast around the bollard the way she had been taught, and said nothing about the midnight deadline. Above them the beam swept round, lit the water white, and went on looking for ships that were already home.
