Sailing ship and whale on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A three-masted sailing ship with red flags and billowing sails sits above a grey sperm whale breaching through teal waves. The whale is shaded in grey with bold black outlines, while the ship's hull is red and the sea is teal, and small birds and a cloud outline fill the upper background. The design runs the length of the forearm, with the ship at the top and the whale's tail at the bottom.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gulls are screaming over the slipway at Hollin Bay the morning the Margaret Ann comes in, and you are the only one on the quay not looking at her red-painted hull. You are looking at the water. Old Teddy Vosper has told the whole of the Anchor that the whale off the point is the same beast that took his brother's boat in 1931, and you have spent the week deciding he is a drunk.

Sure enough, at four o'clock the sea goes flat and silver, and a grey back rises beside the harbour wall, slow as a church roof. Nobody moves. The three masts hang over the water with their sails furled and the flags stiff in the wind, and for one long breath the whale and the ship look as though they are waiting for the other to speak first.

Teddy doesn't shout. He takes off his cap and holds it against his chest, and you understand the thing he never managed to say across forty years of bitter at the Anchor: the sea doesn't keep score. It takes what it takes and gives back what it fancies, and sometimes that is a grudge with a tail on it.

When the whale sounds, the spray hangs in the air a moment, catching the low sun. You walk home along the front with wet cuffs and the taste of salt on your lip, and you decide not to tell your mother about Teddy, or the whale, or how your own hands wouldn't stop shaking on the rail.
