Lighthouse at sunset on a shoulder and upper arm

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A lighthouse stands on a rocky outcrop at the edge of the sea, with its lit lantern room at the top of the tower. Behind it, dramatic clouds glow red, orange and yellow as the sun sets, and the shading gives the rocks and water a soft, detailed finish. Vivid warm ink dominates the piece, with cooler blues and greys in the tower and sea, and the design wraps across the shoulder and upper arm of a person wearing a blue top.

The lamp at Carrick Hollow had been dark for eleven nights when Mairead Doyle finally climbed the iron stair with a tin of paraffin and a bad knee. Her brother had gone over the rocks in March, mending a float that had no business being out in that wind, and the Board had written to say the light would be automated by summer, which in Carrick meant nobody would climb anything at all.

She found the lantern room thick with gull feathers and the brass gone green at every seam. The glass still held. Someone, years back, had scratched a ring of initials into the sill, and she traced them with a thumb while the sun dropped behind the headland and set the whole western sky on fire, cloud after cloud going from rose to tangerine to a yellow so hot it looked wet. The rocks below turned the colour of rust and the sea took the reflection like a dropped coin.

She worked the wick until her hands shook, then struck the match and held it there longer than she needed to. When the flame caught and the great lens swung its first pale finger across the water, a fishing boat three miles out turned its bow for home. Mairead sat down on the cold step, watched it come in through the glass, and decided the Board could write as many letters as it liked.
