Traditional style flash drawing of a red and white lighthouse inside a bottle labelled On the Rocks, with an anchor on the neck, waves and rocks below.

Lighthouse in a bottle flash design

Traditional · Mixed · Flash

A bottle design containing a red and white striped lighthouse with a lit lantern room, surrounded by small star marks and sun rays. Waves and jagged rocks fill the lower part of the bottle, and an anchor sits on the neck above the banner reading On the Rocks. Bold black outlines, solid black shading on the rocks and a limited palette of red, black and grey on a cream background give it a classic flash sheet look.

She had never believed the stories about the Hadley Point light. Her grandfather had sworn it could be seen from forty miles on a clear night, that the keeper had painted the stripes red so the fishermen would know it was theirs. Dell thought that was just the kind of thing men said once they had got to shore. But she sat with the bottle in her lap for an hour, turning it so the little lantern room caught the lamp, and counted the rays of light painted round it the way you count the hours until a watch is changed.

At four bells the wind dropped. The sea went flat and grey, and off the bow, where there had been nothing but cloud, a thin white glow lifted out of the water. Dell didn't say anything. She just put the bottle back on the shelf, label facing the cabin, and went on deck to tell the skipper that they were nearly home.
