Lighthouse on rocks along the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A tall lighthouse with a domed lantern room stands on a craggy rock base, shown in side view on a bare torso. The linework is fine and the shading is soft and detailed, with grey wash on the tower and darker shadows in the rock and window recesses. The design fills the lower side of the frame, with the rock base sitting near the waistband of jeans and a light belt.

The relief boat puts you ashore on the Skerry Mhor in a flat grey wind, and the first thing you learn is that the rock does not care for names. Tomas, the keeper you are replacing, is already on the landing with his kitbag packed and a face like wet slate. He hands you the logbook without a word, then points up at the tower as if it might have been stolen in the night.

Up the stairs there are one hundred and twelve iron steps, and you count every one of them because counting keeps your legs from thinking about the drop. The lantern room is domed and glassy and smells of paraffin and cold brass. Tomas tells you the lamp has not failed in forty-one years. He tells you this twice, the second time looking past the glass at the rocks below, where the sea worries at the base of the tower like a dog at a boot.
On the third night the fog comes in thick enough to swallow the beam at twenty yards. You sit with the logbook open and write the hours down in a steady hand. At four in the morning you hear a bell from the south, faint and wrong, and you climb the stairs with your heart going like a pump. A fishing smack is rising and falling beside the reef, its mast swinging out of the murk. You trim the wick, turn the mirror, and keep the light sweeping until the boat's lantern answers with one small yellow spark.
By dawn the fog has lifted and the rock is a black fist clutching the tower. Tomas will be gone on the next tide, and you will be alone with the gulls and the logbook. You write one line at the bottom of the page, the only thing you will ever be sure of: the light held.
