Lighthouse in a storm on chest and ship on arm

Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A lighthouse rises from crashing waves on the chest, framed by dark clouds and a faint beam of light across the sky. On the upper arm and shoulder, a sailing ship with rigging is shown in a rough sea beneath a cloudy sky. The shading is soft and smooth, with strong contrast between the dark clouds and pale spray, and the image is a close crop of a bare torso and arm.

The keeper's daughter kept the garden on the north side of the rock, where nothing grew but sea kale and the thistles that come up in graveyards. Her father had built the walls twice, once in stone and once in lime, because the wind took the first lot clean off one winter. She talked to the cabbages. Her father said that was harmless, so long as she did not expect them to answer.

The night the Marguerite came in, the sky went the colour of a bruise and the sea rose white against the foot of the tower. The ship was out past the Hollow Stones with her sails in ribbons, and her captain was steering by the lamp, which was the only thing on that coast anybody could steer by. The glass had a crack in it. The wick was wet from the spray coming over the gallery rail, and the oil was low.

The girl ran up the stair with the last of the oil in a stoneware jar, her skirts bunched in one fist. Her father's knee had been bad since autumn, and he had sent her to bed, but she did not go. She poured, trimmed, struck the flint three times before it caught, and held the glass steady while the beam swung out over the water.

By morning the sea had dropped and the Marguerite lay at anchor in the bay with one mast gone. Her captain came up the cliff path with a sack of salt cod and a paper packet of seed from a Lisbon market, and asked for the keeper's daughter. She took the seed and pressed it into the lime at the foot of the north wall. The next spring a row of blue-leaved plants stood there, and the Marguerite came into the bay every year after, just to see whether they had taken.
