Pagoda temple with smoke on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A multi-tiered pagoda-style temple is rendered across the forearm, with wisps of smoke or flame curling above its roofline. The shading is smooth and detailed, using soft grey gradients and sharp darks to give the building depth and volume. The image is a close, slightly angled view of the arm against a studio background, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The first tray is cooling on the rack when you notice the smoke has turned grey, which means the lower oven has taken more heat than the dial admitted. You crouch, slide the peel under the last of the batch and feel the base give slightly, a warning rather than a failure. Hester always said the oven had moods like a dog left out in the rain, and you have learned to read them by smell before you read the thermometer.

Upstairs the floorboards creak once and go quiet again. She is not up yet. The brick oven was built by a mason who copied the tiered roofs of a temple he had seen in a print, and the tin sign above the door still shows that same stacked silhouette, its corners lifting like the edges of a folded napkin. Nobody in the village knows why. You suspect the mason simply wanted a building that looked like it could hold heat.
You open the flue damper and the smoke climbs in a long grey ribbon, past the windowsill where Hester's brother left a small pagoda carved from an old fish crate, past the cracked glass, and out into the blue that is only just starting to show over the harbour. From the street it probably looks like the bakery is burning something holy. Nobody is awake to tell you otherwise.
By the time the bus lights swing across the window, the bread is out and the bell over the door has rung twice. You cut the first loaf along its scored line. The crumb opens in a soft white rush, and the steam goes straight up toward the ceiling, following the path the smoke took, as if the building has been waiting all night to breathe out.
