Lightsaber tattoo over a linear mark
Other · Mixed · Photo
The left panel shows a purple stencil outline of a lightsaber hilt on skin, with a pale raised line running down from above it. The right panel shows the finished tattoo: a grey shaded hilt with a small red detail, and a red blade that follows the line above it. The composition is a close, straight-on view of the skin with plain background.

The hilt was drawn in purple felt-tip on a sheet of tracing paper before the bus came, because Mr Okonedo at the bench in Cricklade would only cut a blade from a thing he had measured twice. Ruth Ashdown had brought him a photograph of the gate at her grandfather's allotment, a pale ridge of galvanised steel where a hinge had torn free years back, and she wanted the red light to start exactly there and run up into the air as though it had always been waiting.

Okonedo said that was not how light worked. He fitted a brass collar, a switch that clicked like a bicycle bell, and a length of red acrylic rod warmed over the spirit lamp until it bent to his thumb. He laid the rod along a steel rule to test it, the way he tested everything, and it held true. Ruth asked whether it would hum. He said only if you wanted it to, then put the kettle on and said nothing else for a quarter of an hour.
The gate went at the end of October. Ruth carried the hilt in a shoebox on the train with her knees against it, and when she set it on the allotment bench her grandfather's hands came out of his coat pockets and turned it over slowly, the way you would turn a bird's egg. He pressed the switch. Nothing lit, because the battery was flat, and he laughed so hard he had to sit down on the water butt.
Later he fixed a new battery into the collar, and the red line ran straight up from the gate into the dusk, exactly over the rusted scar. The two of them stood looking at it until the porch light came on across the lane.
