White ink ribbon knot on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A white ink tattoo of a looping ribbon or knot motif with a curled spiral at the lower right, shown on pale skin. The thin, flowing outlines are light and raised against the skin, and the slight pink redness around the lines suggests the tattoo is fresh or healing. Small red and blue marks sit on the skin nearby, and the dark background isolates the design.

The village hall smelled of floor polish and sausage rolls nobody wanted. Dilys had brought the ribbon in her coat pocket, folded twice, because Sandra Pike had looked at her across the trestle tables and said, "You still have that, then?" and Dilys had not answered, only pretended the question was about the raffle.

In 1991 Mrs Ashdown had taught them to curl ribbon over the blade of the sewing scissors so it sprang into a spiral that held its shape for a whole afternoon. Jo Fenwick had tied her satin into a loop and a curl the morning of the county netball final, pulling the ends tight with her teeth, and they had lost by one goal. Jo never blamed the ribbon. She wore it on her wrist for years after, until the white had gone the colour of weak tea.

Sandra found her in the cloakroom, among the coats that all looked the same. "Her mum gave the ribbon back to me," Sandra said, "after. I should have said."

"I know," said Dilys. "I was there when they gave it to her."

She unfolded the ribbon. It was thinner than she remembered, and the loop had gone soft at the edges, but the curl still sprang when she let it go. She did not tie it round her own wrist. She hooked it over the empty peg beside Sandra's coat, so the spiral faced out towards the hall and the noise, and left it there for whoever came looking for their jacket.
