Arrow through infinity symbol on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a single arrow running diagonally across an infinity symbol, with the arrowhead at the upper right and fletching at the lower left. The linework is thin and even, drawn as a single outline with no shading. The ink appears pale white against the skin, and the design is centred on the wrist with plain skin and a blue plastic surface visible around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the lot of you, and stop pretending you are not listening, because the bride's grandmother has heard this one and so has the vicar, and they both know how it ends. Old Tamsin Rowe kept a bow above her hearth and a daughter who would not stop climbing the sea wall. That is where the trouble started, if trouble is the word for a girl who wanted the far side of the bay.

Tamsin shot one arrow every evening from the top of the cliff path, straight out over the water towards the lighthouse, and every evening the wind caught it and turned it in a slow loop over the harbour before it came down somewhere in the reeds. The fishermen said it was a sign. The priest said it was a waste of good ash. Her daughter Nell ran down for it every night and carried it back up the hill like a dog with a stick, and nobody ever asked her why.

One autumn the arrow did not come down. It went round the bay, round the lighthouse and round again, a figure of eight drawn in the sky, until the lamp was lit and the whole village stood on the quay with their heads tipped back. Nell said she could still hear it singing when she was a grey old woman herself. When it finally dropped, it dropped into Tamsin's open hand, which nobody could explain, and she passed it to her daughter without a word.

So there's your lesson, if you want one. The arrow is yours now, and the fletching still points home.
