Lilies, butterflies and vine sketch

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows several lily blooms, two butterflies with detailed wing patterns and a flowing vine that runs vertically through the composition. Small circles and curling tendrils fill the gaps between the motifs. The linework is in pencil on a textured off-white background, with light shading on the petals and no colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lilies came up through the cracks in Mrs Harwell's yard the spring after the flood, and nobody in Tollbridge could say where they had come from. Her husband had planted nothing there in forty years. Still, the tall white trumpets leaned against the back wall of the chapel every morning, and the children counted the bubbles of dew that hung from their stems like beads on a string.

The butterflies arrived in June, two of them, and they did not leave. They settled on the washing line and on the rim of the well, opening and closing their patterned wings as if they were reading something printed inside. Old Tom at the ferry said they were the souls of the drowned, come to see the town dry. His daughter said he had been saying that since the war and nobody had ever asked him to stop.

In August a girl called Beth Lowry followed the vine that ran from the chapel wall down into the reeds. It curled and doubled back on itself, and where it knotted she found a tin box half sunk in the mud, its lid rusted shut. Inside was a pair of brass ferry tickets, dated the year of the flood, and a note in a careful hand: pay the boatman with flowers, he will take nothing else.

Beth carried one lily down to the water that evening. Tom took it without a word, rowed her across to the far bank, and when she looked back the town was there in its ordinary grey, but the vine was climbing over the ferry house roof and the two butterflies rode the bow like passengers who knew the way.
