Black ink forearm tattoo with a fine line geometric design above a solid band, a serif letter A and two bold bands below, in a Geometric style on the forearm.

Line-art sleeve band with serif A on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm carries a black tattoo in two sections. The upper section is a dense line-art design with a circle, a sunburst, an eye within a triangle, a flower, the word now and small dots. The lower section has two solid horizontal bands framing a large serif letter A. The ink is black only, shown against a dark background.

The sundial came to me in three pieces, wrapped in a horse blanket and smelling of the river, and the man who carried it would not say which family had owned it. I was the only cutter left in Harrowen who could still bracket a serif properly, so I took the work. Mr Pell wanted a bold Roman A for the face and a band of rings round the plate to keep the weather off the letters.

I worked in the lean-to behind the forge through the wet weeks of October. The forest came right down to the back fence then, oak and holly so thick the rooks went quiet at dusk. Each evening I chalked the design onto the slate: a sun over an open eye, a flower, a scatter of dots for rain. Pell asked for a motto along the rim that would never age, so I cut NOW in small capitals and told him nothing ages faster than a motto.

On the last night the chalk would not hold. I came out at dusk to find the path through the trees swept clean, every leaf lifted, and a single lantern moving between the trunks toward the old clearing. I followed it. Pell stood by the stone with the finished plate in his arms, asking me what hour it was. I looked at the shadow the gnomon threw, and it lay straight across the open eye.

I told him it was now. He laughed, set the plate down on its three pieces, and the stone gave one dry tick, as if it had been waiting fifty years to be asked.
