Linework faces tattoo on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a framed design of simple black outline drawing, with a cluster of stylised faces and spiral or circular eyes forming a spotted, animal-like silhouette. Its base is a row of small circles set within a textured band at the bottom of the frame. The ink is uniform black on a light skin tone, photographed straight on with a fabric sleeve and a plain wall in the background.

The hessian was already stretched on its frame when the boy came round the back of the tent shouting that the Hallowell Brothers wanted the booth lit by six. Ada didn't look up. She was mixing the last of the grey, lamp black thinned with turps, and thinking about the faces. She had painted one for every person who had queued by the dodgem cars all summer and told her about someone they had lost. The spirals were for the eyes, because Mr Hallowell said a crowd always looks into a spiral and forgets to leave.

By August the beast had grown a whole spotted hide of them, cheek against cheek, nose against ear, until it looked less like a leopard than a weather system with opinions. Fifth from the bottom she had painted a man who sat ten minutes on the bench without speaking, then said his brother could draw better than her. She gave him the eye nearest the tail, the one that watched backwards.
At the base she inked the row of small circles, counting as she went. Seven. One for every night the fair had stood in this town, and one more that she had not yet decided on.
At six the boy pressed his nose to the frame and asked which face was his. She pointed to a small round one near the front paw, the only mouth open as if about to say something. He grinned and ran off to tell his mum. Ada capped the ink and left the last spiral blank, because a good leopard should always have one thing it has not yet seen.
