Musical notes tattoo on a lower leg

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised creature built from musical symbols, including quaver and crotchet note heads, stems, a bass clef and curved flags. The linework is solid black with no shading, and the lines vary in weight. The design sits centrally on a vertical limb against a warm skin tone, with the bottom edge of the frame cut off.

Dear Dennis,

You'll not believe what's been going on in Hadleigh House since the lift packed in again. Mr Okafor from fourteen has been carrying his tuba down nine flights every Thursday, and between the landings he plays for the stairwell, which echoes better than any hall I've been in. Last week the sound came up through the concrete as a sort of little creature, a thing made of bouncy black notes that scampered up the rail after him, and I swear I saw its tail flick round the banister.

The council man came Tuesday with his clipboard and his cold coffee, and said there was no budget to fix the lift before spring. I told him the lift was the least of it. Half the estate has stopped using the stairs since the damp got in, but Okafor's creature still climbs them every evening, pausing at each landing to wait for us, like it's counting who's left.

Thursday it didn't come. The tuba was in the back of a van, the lad from the van said, sold to a shop in Bristol. I stood on the ninth-floor landing with my bag of shopping and listened to nothing at all for a long while.

Then, on Friday, a wee kid from the ground floor was whistling the tune back up the stairs, badly, one flat note at a time. The creature came back, half the size, its flag bent to one side. I don't know what that means, but I brought the shopping in and put the kettle on and waited to see where it would go next.
