Linked triangles on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A row of linked black outline triangles, some overlapping and some nested, runs along the outer forearm towards the wrist, ending in a small circle. A thin line with a tiny mark sits near the wrist. The photograph is black and white, with the arm shown at an angle against a dark tiled floor, and the linework is crisp and evenly weighted.

Chains of triangles, Harrow wrote in the margin of the field book, were the only honest way across a country. You fixed one point, sighted the next across the valley, and let the angles carry you. He had three stations already, each a cairn with a brass bolt sunk into its top stone, and the fourth lay past a bog that swallowed boots to the ankle. Wendell carried the theodolite on his shoulder like a rifle and complained about it in a steady, unbothered voice.

By the third day the fog had come down so thick they could hear the sheep before they saw them. Harrow set the instrument on the fourth cairn, levelled the bubble and sighted back along the chain. The angles closed to within a tenth of a degree. Wendell wanted to call it good enough. Harrow pointed out that a tenth of a degree, carried four miles, was a field lost to somebody's plough, so they sat an hour on the wet stones waiting for the cloud to lift, eating cold potato from a paper bag.
When it finally thinned, the last sighting did not land on the small ring of stones Harrow had marked for the closing point. It landed on the first cairn, the one they had started from, the bolt glinting exactly where it had been on the morning they set out. The chain had run out across the moor and come back round to its own beginning, like a sum that proved itself. Harrow hung the plumb line from the bolt and watched the bob settle, still, over the centre of the ring, and wrote one word in the book: closed.
