A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stationmaster at Gullsand Halt kept no clock. He told the hour by the sea, which came up the shingle in three long pushes and then, now and again, a short one that caught everyone out. His daughter Ada learned the short push before she learned her letters, and she would stand on the platform with her palm flat against the cold iron of the rail, waiting for it.

One November the short push did not come. The night train was late, the lamp oil was low, and a fisherman's boy named Cal sat on the bench beside a sack of eels he had failed to sell. Ada breathed on the glass of the waiting room and drew two small waves in the mist, the way her father marked the tide on the timetable. She told Cal the sea would read them and remember the way home.

Cal laughed at her. Then the water came up the shingle in its short, unexpected push, exactly where the marks pointed, and he stopped laughing. The train came in on time. He stepped aboard with his eels and never once asked how she had known.

The waiting room was pulled down many winters later, but Ada kept drawing those two waves on every ticket she punched, and the guards said her tickets were the only ones that never went astray.
