Lion and flowers design in blue ink
Botanical · Colour · Flash
A lion's face sits at the centre of a dense arrangement of flowers, including sunflowers, daisy-like blooms, a pansy and trumpet-shaped petals. Fine pen lines and hatching build up the mane, petals and foliage, with stippled dots on the muzzle. The design is drawn in a single blue ink on pale paper across overlapping sheets, with the flowers filling the full composition.

The lion came down from the hills the autumn the mill burned, and he did not eat anyone. He sat at the edge of Harrow Cross with his mane full of seed heads, because the wind had been carrying seeds up from the valley gardens for years, and every bloom had taken root in the tangle of his hair.

The women of the village went up to ask him to leave. Agnes Pell took a rake and a bucket of lime. The lion looked at her with his eyes half shut and said nothing, but a daisy opened on his brow while she watched, then a pansy, then a trumpet flower she could not name. She put the rake down and went home without the lime.
After that the village kept him. They brought him bread on Sundays and cut the sunflowers when the heads grew heavy, and each spring he shook the seed out over the lanes so the whole valley stayed gold through the hungry months. Children asked why he never roared. Agnes told them a lion who grows flowers has no need of noise.
When Agnes died, the lion walked down to her cottage and lay across the step with a lily laid over one paw. Her grandson, who had never liked gardens, found him there at dawn with the petals still wet. He swept the step clean and left the flowers exactly where they had fallen.
