Floral vine sketch with daisies
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn pencil sketch of a flowing vine decorated with five daisy-style flowers, leaves and small curling tendrils. The linework is fine and even, with the outlines left open and no shading or fill. The design sits on a warm, yellowed sheet of paper and spreads across the frame in a loose, ornamental arrangement.

Mr Okafor in bed six had been awake since the cleaners came through. He was a retired signwriter, Ruth had learned, and he watched her hand more than her face. 'Vine's gone wrong at the bottom,' he said one night, squinting across the bay. 'Curl wants to go left, not right.' She rubbed it out with the heel of her hand and tried again, and he was right, and by the end of the month there was a whole trellis of daisies running along the edge of the chart rail.
The ward sister found the drawings in March and said nothing, only tucked a fresh pad into the drawer. Ruth noticed that the daisies were getting fuller, the leaves more confident, the tendrils reaching past the printed boxes into the blank space where nobody wrote anything at all.
On the last night before his discharge, Mr Okafor folded the top sheet into his cardigan pocket. 'Keep the one by the window,' he said. 'It's the one that got the curl right.' Ruth watched him go down the corridor at six, the sky greying over the car park, and when she looked back at the desk the pencil had rolled into the gap between the keyboard and the wall, a single dark line that had not finished growing.
