Lion and woman with flowing hair sketch
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil or ink drawing shows a lion in profile with a full mane, overlapping a woman whose long, wind-swept hair flows across the composition. Fine, dense hatching and crosshatching build the shading on the lion's face and hair, while the woman's face and patterned top are drawn with delicate linework. The image is in black and grey on a cream-toned sheet, shot at a slight angle with the paper curling at the edges.

Her aunt said it was a yellow dog from the Pryces' farm, and the baker said lions had been gone from England since the Romans, which Marta suspected was the sort of thing a baker would say about anything he hadn't seen.

She stopped at the stile above the water meadow and let her hair come loose from its ribbon. It was the one thing her mother had never managed to tame, a dark tangle that caught the wind and carried it off in every direction. Below her the river shone like a pewter dish. Behind her, slow and heavy, the lion came up through the bracken and sat down in the grass with its great head level with her shoulder, its mane lifting as if it were listening.
"You are not real," she told it.
The lion yawned, showing a tongue as pink as a ribbon, and turned its amber eyes towards the village. Marta looked too. Smoke was rising from the chimneys. Somewhere a bell started for evening service, and the lion's ears flattened.
"Fine," Marta said, and climbed down the far side of the stile. The lion rose and came after her, and for the first time in her life she did not mind being followed.
