Lion cub and savannah scene in a heart
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A heart-shaped frame holds a scene of a rocky outcrop, a fallen log, trees, clouds and a pale sun. A small lion cub sits at the bottom of the design, with green leaves around it. Bold black outlines define the shapes, and the colour is applied in flat fills with some shading on the rock and the cub.

He would sit at the foot of the rocks each morning, where the sun came up orange over the ridge and lit the grass like a struck match. He did not hunt. He did not roar. He only watched the far side of the gully, where the acacias stood in a green crowd, and waited for something to change.
The summer the river failed, the grown lions went quiet and the herd thinned to bones. Sefu came to me with her pads cracked and asked whether her son had gone mad. I walked up with her to the log and found him balanced on it, one foot over the drop, staring at the clouds stacked above the far trees.
"They're going to pour," he said, though he had no way of knowing it. He was right. Two days later the sky split open, the gully ran brown and loud, and the old log, that bridge nobody would cut, carried him across first. He sat in the wet grass on the other side and shook himself like something newly born. Thirty years on, I still walk that log whenever I need reminding what patience looks like.
