Mountain landscape in an ornate frame on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A tattoo of a sunrise behind rocky mountains, with a river winding through green fields in the foreground. The scene sits inside an ornate frame with scrolled grey shading. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth, with warm orange and yellow tones in the sky and blues and greens in the landscape. The composition is centred and fills the oval frame.

"The sun comes up behind the three peaks," she said, "and the burn runs down through the fields like someone pouring milk." He worked by lamplight for a month. He scrolled the grey wood into curls like sea foam, and every evening Ilse came back to add what she remembered: the gorse yellow on the near bank, the blue ridge where the cloud sat, the orange that climbed the sky before the sun did.

When he delivered it, she held the frame up to the window and cried, then laughed, and then said the river was wrong. It ran to the left, not the right. Tam looked, and saw she was right, and understood that he had painted it the way his own father had taught him rivers ran.

He offered to fix it. Ilse shook her head and hung the frame on the nail beside her door. "My mother always said that valley never sat where the maps put it," she said. So the river stayed on the wrong side, and each morning the real sun came up over the water and lit the painted peaks at the same hour, as though it had been told where to go.
