Raccoon in a frame on a foot
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A raccoon's face looks out from an oval frame edged with leaves and a decorative scroll. Bold black outlines define the animal, with grey shading on its fur and a light teal panel behind it. Green foliage and touches of orange and yellow add colour to the composition, which sits across the top of a foot.

Mrs Pardoe swore the raccoon had been in the frame before the frame reached her shop, and she said so while the clearance man was still wrapping it in last week's Whitby Gazette. The oval glass had a crack running corner to corner, the leaves round the edge had been painted by someone who loved green, and the animal looked out with the pleased expression of a thief who has not yet been caught. She hung it above the counter because the customers liked a bit of colour in a pawnshop, and because the thing had a face that made people tell the truth about what they were selling.

The spoons went first. Two on Monday, a silver thimble on Tuesday, and on Wednesday morning she found a brass key tucked behind the scroll at the bottom of the frame, pushed in neat as a letter in a post box. Nobody had touched the glass. The bolt on the back door was still shot. She took the key down, turned it over, and recognised the teeth of the strongbox that had been locked since her husband went to sea.
She could have shouted. Instead she sat on the stool with the key in her palm and waited for the shop bell, and when old Tom Ainsley came in asking after his late brother's watch she found herself opening the strongbox and handing it across. The watch was there. So was everything else that had gone missing from the shop in twenty years, lined up on the velvet like a tidy argument.
That evening she left a shilling on the windowsill beneath the frame, the way you'd leave a tip for a lodger who paid in kind. In the morning it was gone, and in its place sat a single bent cherry stone wedged in the green paint, which she decided to take as a receipt.
