She stood with her front feet in the wet grass and her trunk curled up towards the old gate, as if she were asking permission, which is more than the lorry drivers ever did.

Her name, the travelling lad told me, is Dorrie. She belonged to a show that folded in Shrewsbury in April, and she has been walking south ever since, sleeping in the lee of barns and following the smell of windfalls. Nobody could get her onto a trailer, so we left her be. Sam from the post office brought a bucket of pears, and she took the round one from his palm first, the way you'd pick the best plum at a fair, then looked at him as if the rest were an insult.

Thing is, Nell, she reminds me of Dad in the hayfield, the way he would go still whenever a kestrel hung over the far hedge. I have not thought about that in years. Dorrie stood there so long the low sun came through the trees and sat on her back like a blanket.

The Hollises say she can stay through the picking, provided she keeps off the ladders. Come up at the weekend. Bring your good boots, and bring the camera, because nobody will believe me otherwise.
