Lion head tattoo on a thigh

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A lion head tattoo sits on the outer thigh, with a mane drawn as radiating lines and a face rendered in black linework and shading. The rest of the photo shows a standing figure in a grey tank top printed with the slogan LIFT NOW PIZZA LATER, black shorts and a black wristband, in a tiled room with a sofa and a shelf unit behind. The image is well lit and the tattoo is clearly visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lion came up the back stairs of Marrowby General at a quarter to three, when the lift was out of order and the corridor lamps had been turned down to save the current. Nurse Ada Penny heard its pads on the lino before she saw it, and she did not drop the tray of cooling tea, because her mother had always said a nurse who drops things at night will drop the patient next.

It was not a large lion, as lions go. Its mane spread out in stiff rays like the lines a child draws for the sun, and its face was dark with the fine hatching of an old engraving, so that in the half light it looked as if it had been printed onto the air. It walked past the nurses' station, past the drip stands and the sleeping porter, and stopped at bed nine, where a boy called Tomasz lay with a fever that had not broken since Sunday.

Ada followed with her torch. The lion lay down along the side of the bed and rested its great head on the blanket, and it breathed in long, then out, slower each time. Tomasz's breathing, which had been quick and shallow as a sparrow's, began to match it. By the third breath the ward was quiet except for the beeping of the pump. Ada sat on the plastic chair and counted, because counting was what she had.

At six the day shift came in with their coats still wet from the rain. Tomasz was asleep with a cool forehead. The bed beside him was empty, and the blanket still held a warm hollow the shape of something heavy, with a few coarse hairs caught in the weave. Ada never told the sister about the lion. She only asked whether anyone had seen the boy's fever break, and when they said yes, she nodded and said she supposed it had been the night.
