Lion wearing a crown

Realism · Mixed · Flash

A lion's head faces forward with its mane flowing down the sides, drawn in soft greyscale pencil-like shading. A yellow crown with ornate fleur-style points sits on its head, and loose ink splatters and thin swirling lines surround the lower half. A single red streak and small white circle add accents against the flat grey background.

The snow had sealed the pass for three days, and the inn at Hollin Gate ran out of candles before it ran out of guests. You keep the ledger, so you are the one who notices the trunk in the back room that nobody has claimed. Inside, wrapped in tissue gone yellow at the folds, lies a lion's head of painted papier-mâché with a mane cut from old hemp rope, and beside it a crown of gilt card so bright it throws the lamplight back at you.

Tamsin, who cooks, says the players came up from the lowland fair in October, a company of six with a lame dog and a quarrel over money. The lion was their leading man, and he insisted on wearing the crown even at supper, even when the wine went over his sleeve. They left before dawn on the eleventh, walking down into the valley while the road was still a road. He must have gone without his crown on purpose, or else he never thought to come back for it. You cannot decide which idea you dislike more.

On the third night the wind drops and the stars come out hard over the ridge. You carry the trunk to the kitchen, set the mask on the scrubbed table and lift the crown onto its painted brow. The children from the two stranded carters gather round in their nightcaps and begin to argue about whether a lion can be a king if it is made of paper. Nobody answers them. The lamp gutters, the lion looks out at the room with its patient gilded stare, and you realise the crown fits it better than it ever fitted anyone in the company.
