Realism · Mixed · Flash

A realistic black and grey lion's head gazes upward, with a flowing mane shaded in fine strokes and soft tonal gradients. A bright yellow crown with splashed edges sits above the head, and small red and yellow accents appear along the right side. The design is shown on a plain white background with splatter marks and loose swirling lines around the mane.

Ada had been told the lion would come down in pieces, so when the crane swung it free of the wall it seemed a shame to see it held so carefully. The stone head had watched the kitchen garden at Hollin Park for longer than the glasshouses had stood, its mane gone green with moss and its nose worn smooth by a century of rain. Mr Okafor from the council said the crown had been painted gold for the coronation fête in 1953 and never stripped, so flecks of yellow still clung in the hollows of its brow like a joke nobody had the heart to finish.

She found the letter inside the plinth, folded into a seed tin with the lid rusted shut. It was written in pencil by a boy named Tom Greaves, who had been paid sixpence to paint the crown and had signed off, *if the King looks cross it is the rain's fault*. Below that, in a different hand, someone had drawn a red arrow pointing at the lion's jaw and written *keep this one*.

Ada sat on the upturned barrow with the tin in her lap until the driver shouted that the lorry was ready. She did not argue. She kept the tin, the letter, and a scraping of gold from the crown's edge, and she put them all in her coat pocket.

Later, at her kitchen table, she unfolded the sheet under the lamp and found one more line on the back, small and careful: *He only looks up to see where the sun has gone.* She thought of the lion riding south on the lorry with its crown still on, and she laughed out loud at the empty room.
