A lit red candle stands in a dark metal holder, with its flame rendered in pale yellow and white. A large orange glow behind the candle fades into black shading at the edges. The image is a close, straight-on view of the forearm on a black background, with soft gradients throughout.

Every evening the bell at Saltmarrow tolled once, and every evening the candles of the kingdom went out one by one like frightened geese. The king had decreed it after the grain barges burned, and nobody in Saltmarrow was fool enough to argue with a decree that came with soldiers. Only Ysolde Brand, who made tallow candles in the cellar of the old chandlery, kept her own lit. She set the red one in its dark tin dish on the sill each night and let the orange glow spill across the flagstones, and each morning the sergeant came by to count the windows and found hers the only one still bright.

Her son Tam had gone upriver with the wool boats in the spring and had not come back by the autumn tides. The sergeant said the river was no road for a boy to walk, and Ysolde said that was exactly why a light was needed on it. She trimmed the wick with her thumb and nail, as her mother had, and told nobody what she was doing, because a lit window during curfew is a thing people write letters about.

On the thirtieth night a boat came round the bend without a lantern. Ysolde watched its shape from the sill, dark on dark, and saw the flame lean toward the river in the draught from the open door, as if it were pointing. She lifted the candle down and carried it to the landing stairs, cupping it with her palm until the wind had nothing left to take.

The lad stood up in the bow, thin as a reed, and called her name across the black water. The flame did not waver once in her hand, as though it had been waiting for him too.
