Little Prince on a planet on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A tattoo on the lower leg shows a small figure in a green outfit standing on a large pale blue planet against a deep blue starry sky. A red-tailed comet, orange dots and a green ringed planet are placed around the planet, with the shading soft and blended on the planet's surface. The image is a close, straight-on photo of the calf, with the leg filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pargeter let rooms at the end of Crescent Row, and the boy in number four came down every morning with sand in his turn-ups and a pencil behind his ear. He was nine, or said he was, and he had a fixed idea that the sea was only a very large puddle on a very small world. I told him that was nonsense and gave him an extra rasher of bacon anyway.

The second week of August he asked if he could borrow the saucepan lid. I thought he meant it as a shield for some game, but he carried it up to the flat roof above the bathroom, propped it against the chimney stack and drew a circle on it with chalk. Then he pointed out the planets the way a bus conductor calls out stops. A little one with a ring, he said, where a man sits all day lighting lamps. Another where the sun goes down forty times in a single afternoon. He had a comet too, with a red tail, and he showed me a length of red wool he had knotted to the end of his kite string.

On the last night before his mother came to fetch him, the sky over the pier went the colour of a bruise and then cleared, and he stood on the roof with his arms folded like a captain. "There," he said. "Mine is the one with the blue, and I left a rose on it." I looked and saw only stars and the lamps of the ferry. I have never seen him since, but I kept the saucepan lid, dented and chalked, and it hangs by the back door where the guests can see it.
