Watercolour pocket watch and girl on calf

Dotwork · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A line-drawn girl with a hair bow sits above a large pocket watch with a stylised eye at its centre. Black dotwork fills a band across the middle, and a thin circular outline runs behind the watch. Loose watercolour splashes in orange, blue, yellow and pink surround the design, with a faint line of small numerals near the lower edge.

The snow has sealed the coach road since Tuesday, and the innkeeper's daughter has stopped pretending she isn't counting the coins you leave on the bar. You sit by the kitchen fire with the pocket watch on the table, its lid open, the enamel face staring back with a single painted eye at its centre. Nobody in Hallow Ferry can say who made it. The landlord says it came in with a guest who never came down for breakfast.

At midnight the watch begins to tick faster than the clock above the hearth. The girl with the blue ribbon in her hair, the one who sweeps ash and hums under her breath, sets down her broom and says the eye has been watching the door all evening. Her grandmother used to wind it every winter so the snow would not take the road for good. You laugh, but the soot specks on the flagstones have arranged themselves into rows like a ledger, and one row is a single hour short.

You wind it anyway. The crown is stiff with cold and turns with a small reluctant click. Beyond the window the blizzard drops its voice, and the lane runs clear to the church, lanterns lit in every house, a line of footprints leading away from the inn that you don't remember making. The girl pulls on her coat and lifts the latch.

The watch goes still in your palm just as the first grey light finds the snow. Behind you, the footprints are already filling in, and the girl is waiting at the gate with the look of someone who has walked this road many times before.
