Teacup, pitcher and teapot on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A red teacup, an orange pitcher and a blue teapot with lid are stacked and overlapped within a cloud outline, with small four-pointed stars scattered around them. The objects are drawn with bold black outlines and smooth shading that gives each piece a rounded, glossy look. The vivid red, orange and turquoise sit against pale skin, and the design fills the frame from top to bottom on the lower leg.

The urn had boiled dry twice before the Pemberton sisters came up the pier steps, and Mrs Hale was already shouting for more cups from the back kitchen. I was nineteen and too proud to cry over crockery, so I hauled the big blue teapot off the hotplate and started pouring for the Tuesday tea dance as if the whole ballroom depended on it.

Everything rattled that afternoon. The orange jug had a chip that drew a thin white line down its side whenever I tilted it, and the red cups hissed in their saucers as if they wanted to be somewhere else. Steam rose off the trays and gathered under the ceiling in soft grey heaps, and the little brass stars on the light fittings caught it and seemed to wink at me. Mr Costa from the Pier Bar swore they were a publicity gimmick. I thought they were laughing at us.
Then Eddie Lowe came across the parquet with his cap in his hand, and I knew he was going to ask me to dance before he opened his mouth. He had two left feet and a laugh like a kettle, and I told him I had three hundred cups to fill. He said he would wait. He waited through the whole foxtrot, through the Pemberton sisters' row over sugar and the blue lid rattling loose on its pot, until the band slowed and there was nobody left at the tables but us.
I poured him one last cup, milky and too sweet, and he drank it standing up. Then I set the pot down, lifted the cloth from my shoulder, and let him lead me out onto the floor through the thin white steam. Nobody noticed the tea going cold on the trolley. Nobody needed to.
