Candy castle landscape on a lower leg

Calf · Colour · Photo

A candy-themed fantasy scene runs down the calf and onto the ankle, centred on a castle with ice cream and cupcake-style towers and pink and purple sugar-like roofs. Smaller details include lollipops, gumdrops, a blue bird on a cloud path, and two cartoon figures with orange hair at the foot. The shading is soft and blended with bright, saturated colour across the whole design, set against a wooden floor.

Mrs Pelham kept two rules at Seacrest House on the Kentish cliffs: no dogs on the beds, and nobody under ten went up to the sweet cupboard on the landing. I was nine the summer the Corrigans arrived from Leeds with their boy Alfie, and by the second week I had broken the second rule twice, both times with him.

Alfie drew in a school exercise book with a chewed pencil. Every afternoon he added to the same castle: a fat tower of ice cream at its centre, pink sugar roofs, bricks the colour of butterscotch, a stream of lemon sherbet running down to a lake, lollipops planted along the path like a garden. "That's where we'll live," he said, "when we're grown and nobody can tell us about bedtimes." He gave the two little figures at the bottom our hair, both orange as marmalade, and a blue bird on a cloud path to carry messages between us.

On the last Saturday the Corrigans loaded the van and drove off before breakfast. Alfie's book had been pushed under the sweet cupboard door, and I kept it in my school bag for the next forty years, through two house moves and one divorce. I never opened it without a faint gumdrop smell rising off the pages, though every sweet had long since gone.

Last month I finally wrote to the address printed on the back cover. The reply came in big, careful capitals, with a bird drawn in the corner sitting on a cloud. It said the castle was still there, that I only had to find the path, and that the bird knew the way.
