Live fearless script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of thin black script lettering reading live fearless, with the word live set above and slightly to the right of fearless. The linework is even and delicate, with a single looping flourish trailing from the final letters. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a soft, blurred background of pink patterned fabric, with part of a hand visible at the right.

It was addressed to Catriona Beaton, at the cottage above the slipway, and inside was a single card. Someone had written two words on it in a hand so fine you'd need a lamp to read it. The top word leaned over the bottom one like a gull over a fence post, and the bottom one ran on and on, its tail swinging off the edge of the card as if it had somewhere else to be. Live. Fearless.
Catriona had been three years a widow by then, and she had not opened a window since the funeral. She read it standing at the sink with her hands wet, and then she sat down on the flagstone floor, which is where Ruairidh found her when he came back for his mug. She never said who had sent it. Nobody on Tarrin owned a pen that finely pointed.
Here is the thing I tell the children. The next spring she took the boat to Oban for the first time in her life, and she came home with a pot of black ink and a nib no thicker than a hair. She wrote those two words on the lintel above her own door, and every morning after, she put her palm flat against them on her way out to the hens.
