Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind shows a black ink tattoo on her upper back, with the words live free written in cursive script beside three bird silhouettes in flight. The lettering has a thin, handwritten line and the birds are solid dark shapes of varying size. The image is warmly toned with a dark background, and the tattoo sits in the centre-right of the frame.

She had been meant to sign a lease in Bakersfield that morning, a narrow flat above a bakery with a window facing the freight yard. She had read the contract twice in the car park and then driven out past the grain silos instead, with the note in her shirt pocket like a bus ticket she couldn't throw away. Her father had never once left the county in forty years of running the filling station at Mojave Junction. She pulled onto a gravel turnout beside a fence line of dead mesquite, cut the engine, and listened to the metal tick as it cooled. Three ravens lifted off a post a hundred yards away, one after another, and wheeled out over the dry lake. She counted them the way he had counted lorries, and when they were gone she folded the note along its old crease and tucked it back behind the visor.

She didn't turn the car around. She sat with the window down, the smell of hot dust coming in, and let the engine stay cold for a while.
