Live the life you love script on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a hand and wrist with fine line script lettering arranged in a loose circular arc, reading live the life you love. The linework is thin and even, with the words set in a mix of handwritten and print-style letters. The image is in greyscale, and the background is blurred, with dark painted nails visible at the top of the frame.

Sit closer, the lot of you, the wind off the Sump gets into every gap. You want the tale of Oma Desh and the ring of letters? Then hush. In the year the tide took the old harbour wall, Desh went down the rusted ladders at Bell Quay with a lamp and a pry bar. Under the weed she found an iron ring set into the stone, as wide as a cart wheel, and across it ran words cut by a hand that wandered: some letters tall and proper like a sign-painter's, others looping like a child's who had only just learned. Live the life you love, it said, and the words went round and round, so where you began reading was a choice and nobody's rule.

Desh tried to find the start. Her brother said begin at the top, where the small words sat, but the cut ran on past them, so she could never say which came first. She spent a whole winter at it with chalk and slate. The men on the quay laughed and brought her bread anyway, and a few of them stopped laughing once they had tried it themselves and gone home quiet.
On the last night of the frost she gave up on the start and read from wherever her thumb happened to lie. Love, the life, live, you. Then she laughed out loud in the empty dock, because a circle has no first word, only the one you decide to stand on. She had been hunting for a beginning when the whole point was that she could begin anywhere.
So when you go out past the wall tomorrow, and the sea is grey and nothing is written on it, pick your word and start there. Now off to bed, before I tell you about the eel.
