We pulled into Hartlepool Sands on Tuesday, and the big wheel still has the same bulb missing from its third spoke, so you'll be pleased to know nothing has changed except me. Dad's cough is worse. He sits in the caravan doorway with the Racing Post and tells me the ghost train needs new hinges, which is his way of saying he is tired of hearing about them.

The thing I wanted to tell you is about the waltzer. Mr Pask painted the sign over its gate every spring, a loop drawn like a figure eight lying on its side, with the words running round it in two hands, capitals for the stern bits and his curly script for the bits he liked. You remember he only ever painted the loop with live the life you love, so the lads could never tell which end began. Last Thursday I climbed the ladder to touch it up and found he had written a second line underneath in pencil, very small: you have to choose the loop.

I stood on that ladder longer than I should have, with the wind pulling at the tarpaulin and the generator coughing below. Then I went down and bought a ticket for the last car of the waltzer, which I had never once done in my life. It spun me round until the fairground lights smeared into one bright ribbon, and I laughed like a girl, and when it slowed I did not get off.
