Infinity quote lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink tattoo on the inner forearm, where the words live the life you love are arranged in a looping infinity symbol. The script and block capitals are drawn in thin, crisp black lines with no shading, set against soft grey skin tones. The loop fills the lower half of the frame and the background is softly out of focus.

Dear Nell, the bus from Piccadilly was empty tonight except for a man asleep under a Co-op bag, and I thought of you the whole way out to Didsbury. You'll say I'm soft. I'm writing this on the back of a bus timetable because the notebook you gave me is still in the drawer where you left it, and I can't bring myself to use it yet.

Mum's kitchen light was on when I got home, which means she's been up again, staring at the clock like it owes her money. She asked after you. I said you'd rung from Lisbon, which was true, though you'd only rung to ask whether we'd kept the spare key under the same brick. We had. It's still there, and it's still the wrong brick, and nobody's ever once got it right but you.

Here is the thing I meant to say at the station. The old hoarding outside the platform still has the words painted across it, grey at the edges now: live the life you love, love the life you live. The letters run round in a loop like a snake eating its tail, and where the last word meets the first, the paint has worn thin enough that I stood there like a fool trying to work out where it began.

I think it begins at the brick. I'll leave the key where it is. Come home when you're ready, bring the good coffee, and we'll start it again from the top.

Love, Tom
