Fine line London skyline tattoo with fireworks and stars on a limb, glowing blue and pink under ultraviolet light.

London skyline with fireworks in UV ink

Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

A London skyline runs vertically down the limb, including the London Eye wheel and a spire-topped tower, with a small clock-like motif and lettering at the top. Thin black-outlined linework is shaded with soft purple clouds, and fireworks and stars are inked in glowing blue and pink, which appears to be ultraviolet-reactive ink photographed under a dark background. The composition is tall and narrow, with the skyline following the length of the limb.

Mattie Vane kept her inks in a biscuit tin with a clock painted on the lid, and she carried them in a wagon behind the fair as it crawled north up the Great North Road. The fair had a wheel so slow a child could count the stars from the top of it. Nobody in the villages knew who had built the wheel. They knew only that the men who ran it never slept in one town twice.

The trouble started at Wetherby, when Ned Harrow, the owner's grandson, climbed the spokes on a dare and got stuck at the top with the brake jammed. Below, the crowd went quiet. Mattie climbed the scaffold with her tin and a brush no thicker than a thread. She had no time for a proper drawing, so she painted the city he had left behind on the cold iron beside his hand, one tower at a time: the clock with its little hands, the spires, the great wheel turning in the dark. Her ink was ground from a powder that showed its colour only when the lamps were turned low.

Ned kept his eyes on the painted towers and began to name the streets he could remember, one after another, Fleet and Pall and Threadneedle, until the names were all he could hear. The brake gave at the last name, and the wheel came down as slow as a sigh.

Mattie packed her tin that night and left the blue and pink behind on the iron. Whenever the fair sets up in Wetherby and the lamps go down, the sky over the green still glows faintly, and no one there has ever managed to scrub it away.
