The lamp finally arrived from the salvage yard at Greenwich, and I have spent three nights with it held over the wall of the old chandlery, waiting for the city to wake up. You were right. Nothing shows in daylight. Then the ultraviolet light passes over the plaster and the whole skyline comes up out of the dark: Big Ben's clock face, the great wheel turning on its spokes, the office towers, each window a small blue square someone once paid to keep lit.

Mum used to say the fireworks were the only time the river belonged to everybody. I thought it was just a story she told so I would sleep. Last night, when the lamp caught the sky above the roofs, I saw pink bursts flaring over the chimneys exactly where she said they would be, faint as breath on glass. Somebody in this quarter painted them onto the cloud-stained plaster years ago, and the ink has held through all the wet winters.

I took the lamp down to the market this morning. Old Teodor, who keeps the pigments, swore the blue came from the sea salt in the lagoon mines, though he could not say why it glowed. He only laughed when I asked whether the wheel still turned. It does not. But when I held the lamp steady, the spokes seemed to hum.

Send word if the lamp reaches you. Bring the hinge key from the chapel door. I want to show you the city before the batteries give out.
