Small cat outline on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small, single-line outline of a cat seen from behind, with its tail curling down, sits on the side of the ribcage. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The bare skin and soft lighting fill most of the frame, with a hand and a little dark hair at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Hattie, I didn't go to the reunion in the end. I got as far as the car park behind the old sports hall, watched the bunting sag over the doors and the folding tables carried in by men I half recognised, and then I sat in the car with the engine off until the caretaker came out to lock the gate.

I was thinking about Smoke, the grey cat who lived on the bins behind the science block. Do you remember how he never once came when we called him? He'd sit with his back to us, tail curled down the side of him like a question mark somebody had trimmed. We used to say he was the only one of us who'd worked out what the school was for, which was leaving.

Mr Gardiner said I'd never finish anything, and I believed him for thirty years. Then last spring I found my old sketchbook under the bed, and on the second page was that cat, drawn in one unbroken line because I'd been too impatient to lift the pencil. I've been drawing him again every night since, always from behind, because that's the only view I ever got of him.

Tell everyone at the hall I said hello. Tell Mr Gardiner nothing at all. And if you see the caretaker, ask him whether the cat still sits by the bins, because I'd like to know that one thing from that place stayed exactly where it was. Love, Jo.
