Looped line design with love script
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black pen sketch on squared graph paper shows a continuous looping line that forms a rounded figure with a small inner loop at the top. The word love is written in flowing cursive across the lower section, with the line connecting into the lettering. The drawing is in black ink only, with the thin, even strokes typical of a fine line design.

The corridor on Ward Seven hums at three in the morning, and I have learned to count the buzzing strip lights the way other people count sheep. Mrs Ormerod in bed four wants her blinds open. Bed six is asleep with his mouth open, which I have decided to take as a good sign. I do my rounds with a biro in my top pocket and a sheet of squared paper folded in my clipboard, because on quiet nights I doodle to keep my hands honest.

Tonight the doodle was the thing I had drawn during the handover, a single line that wandered up from the bottom of the page, looped into a small knot at the top, and came back down to spell out a word. My sister saw it on the desk and said it looked like a tail, or a bell, or a child's idea of a flame. I said it was a word that wouldn't stay still, and she laughed at me for being poetic at a nurses' station.
At half past four Mrs Ormerod pressed her call button and asked me, very seriously, what the squiggle was. I told her it was a love letter written in a hurry. She made me read it aloud, then said the loop at the top was the bit that mattered, because it was where the pen had turned round and gone back to start again.
I tore the page out, folded it into my pocket and left it there. When the sun came up over the car park I opened the blinds for her myself, and she said that was the only thing she'd wanted all night.
